Our current strategy talks of ‘livestock – a pathway out of poverty’.
Please suggest a short motto, slogan or tagline that you think captures the essence of ILRI and its work.

I like/prefer our current tagline but an alternative could be ‘Livestock for better lives!
I think the current tagline, “Better lives through livestock”, is a good encapsulation of what ILRI works to achieve.
Agreed Tezira! I’ve just thought of another…
ILRI – where livestock is important!
some thoughts:
‘Sustainable livestock for the poor’
‘Better lives through sustainable livestock’
‘Better lives through responsible livestock’
4. I like our current tag line. However, given that the audience we address want results how about “our hoofprint on poverty”?
“Hoofprint”… the pigs and chicken might feel left out 🙂
just love ‘Better lives through livestock’ it is ime tasted and has worked
Livestock – for capacity building & Sustainability
Environmentally Sustainable Livestock Systems – for better nutrition, livelihoods, & farms
We should make it more inclusive of what we plan to do e.g. Better lives through livestock and fish
Better lives through Impact Livestock Research
I like the present one, but Better Lives through Livesock is also nice. Possibly expanded to:
Better Lives through Livestock: ILRI’s Research for Development Strategy.
My take
A bright future through livestock
I like ‘Better Lives through Livestock’…
Or maybe something like ‘Livestock for Life’ or a variation on it?
I like the same old one… It’s plenty.
I like the tagline many suggested: ‘Better Lives through Livestock’
Our former strategy was called ‘livestock: a pathway out of poverty’
Our emails use the tagline ‘better lives through livestock’
I like something plural …. ‘lives’, ‘pathways’, futures
I like something positive/optimistic: improved or better livelihoods, lives, less about what the people are escaping from and more on where we want them to go
at the P&C retreat in January we were linking more around ‘leveraging livestock knowledge’ of all, for all ….
Better lives through livestock ….is definitely a winner here.
A tagline is a branding slogan used in marketing materials and advertising. The idea behind the concept is to create a memorable phrase that will sum up the tone and premise of a brand, or to reinforce the audience’s memory of a product.
ILRI’s strategy to 2010 was pathways out of poverty. by the same token, the strategy 2013 – 2022 can then have a different title, separate from the branding slogan. So for branding I go with better lives through livestock.
For the title of the strategy 2013-2022 what do we want to promise and deliver on? trying to steal from what everyone has shared here so far, how about: ‘Sustainable livestock systems through better knowledge sharing’
1).Livestock for survival and prosperity
2). Livestock fpr fod security and prsperity
3). Now the poor can surely prsper
4).Livestock for transforming poverty to prosperity
Better lives through sustainable livestock. I think adding a word “sustainable” will be a good sell to donors, governments and the community
Livestock for Change;
Putting Lives & Livestock First;
Making Livestock make Cents;
Livestock – making more possible;
Livestock Partnerships for better lives;..
i rest my case.
I would suggest..”Livestock innovations for increasing food security and improving livelihoods”
I think the current tagline for ILRI should remain
‘Better lives through livestock’
or
if we want to add the environmental element
‘Better lives and lands through livestock’
although the latter is weaker due to being longer.
Please, let us not use the jargon word ‘sustainable’!
Then as, Jane Gitau recommends, we should think hard about a short title for the refreshed strategy, which can then be our short phrase for referrring to ILRI’s long-tern strategy.
Livestock towards inclusive growth
I like the current one as well, but if it needs to be changed let me propose the following compromise to include a dimension related to Environment and Equity that may be missing in just “better lives”
LIVESTOCK FOR BETTER LIVES AND A BETTER WORLD
I agree…sustainability and innovations seem to be the buzz words these days…..
Livestock for livelihoods
Livestock for the poor
Livestock research for poverty reduction
But i like “Better lives through livestock”
I agree that the present one is pretty good. The only issue I would have with it is that it is not livestock-specific “Better lives through shop-lifting” would be just as applicable (for the lifter if not the liftee!). There are some things that livestock keeping offers to livelihoods that other agricultural activities do not; risk reduction and “security” would be one obvious example, flexible particpation in markets another (and so on). Something like “Securing Livelihoods through Livestock” would capture this better although I am sure Peter B’ and co could encapsulate what I am talking about more effectively. At least there would be no danger of one of the crop centres trumping us with “Securing Livelihoods through Crop Production in Marginal Areas”. I would also suggest a maximum of six words with no sub-clauses.
How about “Livestock Knowledge for Better Lives”
Better lives through livestock is good as branding slogan.
For the forthcoming strategy something on sustainable livestock systems for improved livelihoods, better incomes and environmental benefits… I like the sustainable livestock systems…
How about “Improved livelihoods through sustainable livestock innovations”
What ever we choose must be simple, memorable and meaningful. Something the public can understand immediately without further explanation
This too pompous and long, but maybe something like:
‘Leveraging livestock livelihoods for better lives and lands’.
