As part of the strategy development process, ILRI organized two main sets of external consultations with stakeholders.
The first, between May and August, asked people to comment on the ILRI strategy ‘storyline’ as well as three ‘tough issues’ where we wanted some critical inputs and feedback (adopting a value chain approach in our research; increasing our research on livestock productivity; and addressing the interface of animal and human health).
The second, in July and August, comprised six consultation meetings with external partners in Accra (15 August), Addis Ababa (24 July), Delhi (6 August), Gaborone (30 July), Nairobi (21 August) and Pretoria (31 July).

Thank you for the opportunity to continue providing input. There are many good things in this strategy. One question keeps running through my mind in relation to indicators of impact – how to build into the indicators a practical measure of sustainability/resilience of livestock systems? On pp6 and 19-20 there quite a variation in the specificity of descriptions (from “food security is improved” or “reduced vulnerability” to “increase in annual pig production in 2017”) and a large gap between the broader narrative statements (“food security has improved” or “reduced vulnerability”) and the bald numbers that will be attached to them. It’s difficult measuring the “big” indicators and even more difficult assessing whether systems are sustainable/resilient – why not build into the research programme something that explicitly looks at ways of assessing those factors?
